Chemical pleurodesis
It consists of the application of irritant substances in the pleural space (space between the membrane covering the lung and the thoracic wall) to minimize the amount of liquid accumulated. These substances make the walls of the pleural space to become inflamed and get together. This may help to prevent the accumulation of air or liquid in that space.
Irritant substances are put through a flexible tube inside the pleural space, through a small cut or incision in the skin. It’s performed under local anesthesia.
